Insights from the 6th ASEAN FAW Taskforce Meeting | 20 June 2024

The ASEAN FAW Action Plan shared significant updates in the โ€œ6th Meeting of the ASEAN FAW Taskforceโ€, held 20 June 2024. Dr. Alison Watson, Head of the ASEAN FAW Action Plan Secretariat, presided the meeting. This also featured valuable contributions from IPPCAAS (China), sharing insights from their research and experiences with FAW management.

The meeting reviewed the status and progress on the ASEAN FAW Action Plan and highlighted individual country updates on FAW mitigation strategies. The Secretariat also reported on its activities over the past year, underscoring collaborative efforts across the region. Guest speakers from IPPCAAS (China) enriched discussions with their research findings and lessons learned in managing FAW.

Each member country of the Taskforce provided updates on FAW infestation and outlined projects implemented, as well as any update on one other priority plant pest or disease.
Represented the Philippines, Mr. Mar de Guzman from the Bureau of Plant Industry โ€“ Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD) gave crucial insights and BPIโ€™s efforts against Fall Armyworm (FAW) infestations into his presentation titled โ€œUpdates on Fall Armyworm (FAW) Infestation Levels in the Philippines and Project Implementedโ€.

โ€ข FAW Infestation Levels: Mr. de Guzman reported on the current status of FAW infestations across the Philippines. The presentation highlighted a notable decrease in FAW infestations across the Philippines from 2020 to 2024, signaling positive progress in containment efforts.
โ€ข Management Efforts: He detailed the proactive measures spearheaded by BPI-CPMD and various regions nationwide to manage and control FAW outbreaks effectively.
โ€ข Implemented Projects: An overview of the projects undertaken by the Philippines to manage FAW, showcasing innovative approaches and partnerships.
โ€ข Impacts of the Activities Done by BPI on FAW: Emphasizing the tangible impact and effectiveness in mitigating the spread and damage caused by this invasive pest.

This update underscores the Philippines’ dedication to addressing agricultural challenges posed by invasive pests like FAW, contributing actively to national and regional initiatives aimed at sustainable pest management.
