Exciting news from Baguio City!
The 4th National Biocon Forum just kicked off! The Bureau of Plant Industry – Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD) is making waves with this three-day event all about Biological Control Agents (BCAs). The event was co-organized by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), CGIAR (formerly the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research), and Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice).
Yesterday, 28th day of May 2024, we saw a bunch of eager faces gathered at the Orchard Hotel, Baguio City, ready to dive deep into the world of biological control. Welcoming a diverse group of 105 participants representing various stakeholders in the field of biological control, the forum opened its doors with warm greetings from Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban of the Bureau of Plant Industry, Dr. Peter M. Magdaraog, Division Chief of BPI-CPMD, Mr. Allan Aquino, Department of Agriculture โ Office of the Secretary (DA-OSEC) Representative, and Ms. Angeline O. Marino, Chief of Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) โ Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
The first day was packed with engaging presentations, shedding light on the latest research and developments (R&Ds) in BCAs. But, before these presentations, attendees had the opportunity to explore, view, and engage with six insightful poster exhibits as they gathered for a special pre-forum session. These exhibits provided a sneak peek into some R&Ds in the field of BCAs.
Here’s a glimpse of some of the resource speakers who shared their insights:
1) Dr. Barbara L. Caoili, Director, National Crop Protection Center (NCPC), College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS), University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos (UPLB) โ โResearch and Development of Biological Control Agents: The NCPC Initiativesโ;
2) Sci. Melissa P. Montecalvo, University Researcher III, UPLB-NCPC โ โBiological Control of Invasive Insect Pests Using Entomopathogensโ;
3) Sci. Marcela M. Navasero, Scientist II, UPLB-NCPC โ a) โBiological Control of Invasive Pests of Coconut in S&T Community-based form in Nagcarlan, Lagunaโ; and b) โBiological Control Using Predatory Insects and Mitesโ;
