The Department of Agriculture-CARAGA, through the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) and the Regional Corn Program, sponsored a 3-day training for IPM/Corn Coordinators and selected Pest Scout Farmers from different corn clusters in Alameda Farm Resort Inc. located at San Agustin, Surigao del Sur on March 15-17, 2024.
This training aims to capacitate participants in pest and disease identification and management for the preparation in their implementation of a 5-Year Program on Bantay-Peste Brigade and Management (PBBM) for the corn cluster level.
In line with this, the BPI-Crop Pest Management Division technical staff, Ms. Merabil L. Corpuz, was invited to give lectures on the following topics: a) Protocols on Corn Pest and Disease Surveillance; b) Introduction to Digital Data Surveillance; and c) Data Processing using the BPI Online Information System.
Also, Ms. Corpuz along with the RCPC staff, facilitated during the field practicum to ensure the capability and effectivity of each participants in familiarization on potential biological control agents (BCAs), identification of corn arthropod pest and diseases, and determination on the appropriate control measures based on the actual situation in the farm. Meanwhile, monitoring and surveillance was done using digital data capturing device (mobile application).
Afterwards, the gathered data were analyzed with the help of the regional data manager.
Presentations of participants’ output, group discussions, and self-assessment were done to evaluate their knowledge and learning throughout the program.
