VIENTIANE, LAO PDR. Ms. Julie Fearl G. Doping from the Bureau of Plant Industry – Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD) has participated in a week-long Regional Diagnostic Workshop under Intervention on Transboundary Pests and Diseases, from September 23-28, 2024, at Vientiane Laos. This workshop is organized by the Alliance Bioversity International, CIAT, and Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
This workshop brings together national plant protection organizations from ASEAN countries to be equipped with practical tools and skills for early detection and control of threatening transboundary pests and diseases.
Ms. Doping was introduced to practical, low-cost physical and digital tools for identifying pathogens and pests. Field collection of cassava petioles infected by Cassava Witches Broom Disease (CWBD). Hands-on training on laboratory-based morphological and molecular techniques for detecting the fungal pathogen of CWBD, and insect pests in Rice. As well as capacity experience on metagenomic data curation and analysis.
Participation in this kind of international training opens up a huge and invaluable opportunity to strengthen the functions and mandate of the BPI-CPMD through knowledge capacitation of the technical staff on best techniques and advanced technologies to be proactive in the surveillance and management of pests and diseases.
