DAY 2

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Bureau of Plant Industryโ€”Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD) collaborate to conduct hands-on training on the mass production and utilization of various biological control agents (BCA) currently produced at BPI-CPMD.

On October 8, the second day of their week-long training, the six (6) Timorese delegates were trained by CPMD technical staff on the mass rearing and production of earwigs (Euborellia annulata and Chelisoches morio), green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea), coccinellid beetle (Chilochorus nigrita), and entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae. The training encompasses the preparation of media and substrates, the preparation and maintenance of initial culture and population, and mass production using different media and substrates. The possible alternatives, methods of field release, and recommendation rates on the use of respective BCA were also discussed.

The training was led and conducted by Division Chief Dr. Peter Magdaraog, Assistant Division Chief Ms. Precerpina Luzaran, Biological Control and Integrated Pest Management Section Chief Ms. Ruzz-Uzi Mayenne Ebora, Pest Forecasting Section Chief Ms. Merabil Corpuz, and Ms. Blessie Joy Olarve, along with the technical and laboratory staff of the Biocon and IPM Section of the division.
