DAY 3
The week-long โTraining on the Mass Production and Utilization of Biological Control Agents (BCAs) for the Management of Fall Armyworm (FAW)โ conducted by the Bureau of Plant Industry – Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) continues on its third day.
Led by CPMD Chief Dr. Peter Magdaraog, the six (6) delegates from Timor-Leste started Day 3 of the training with a visit to the CPMD screenhouse. Dr. Magdaraog, Mr. Lean Marley Salonga, and Ms. Jaycee Andreah Villaraza detailed the host plants and insects grown at the screenhouse. These include common purslane or ulasiman (๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ต๐ถ๐ญ๐ข๐ค๐ข ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ข) and onion (๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ค๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ข) for onion armyworm (๐๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข ๐ฆ๐น๐ช๐จ๐ถ๐ข), corn (๐ก๐ฆ๐ข ๐ฎ๐ข๐บ๐ด) for fall armyworm (๐๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข ๐ง๐ณ๐ถ๐จ๐ช๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฅ๐ข) and corn leaf aphids (๐๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ฐ๐ด๐ช๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ฎ๐ข๐ช๐ฅ๐ช๐ด), yardlong bean or sitao (๐๐ช๐จ๐ฏ๐ข ๐ถ๐ฏ๐จ๐ถ๐ช๐ค๐ถ๐ญ๐ข๐ต๐ข ๐ด๐ด๐ฑ. ๐ด๐ฆ๐ด๐ฒ๐ถ๐ช๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ด) for black bean aphid (๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ช๐ด ๐ง๐ข๐ฃ๐ข๐ฆ), eggplant (๐๐ฐ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ข) for mealybugs (๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ค๐ฐ๐ค๐ค๐ถ๐ด ๐ค๐ช๐ต๐ณ๐ช), and rice (๐๐ณ๐บ๐ป๐ข ๐ด๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ท๐ข) for brown planthopper (๐๐ช๐ญ๐ข๐ฑ๐ข๐ณ๐ท๐ข๐ต๐ข ๐ญ๐ถ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ด). These insects will be used as natural diet for BCAs such as zigzag ladybird beetle (๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ช๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด ๐ด๐ฆ๐น๐ฎ๐ข๐ค๐ถ๐ญ๐ข๐ต๐ข), multicolored Asian lady beetle (๐๐ข๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ข ๐ข๐น๐บ๐ณ๐ช๐ฅ๐ช๐ด), and green lacewing (๐๐ฉ๐ณ๐บ๐ด๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ญ๐ข ๐ด๐ฑ.)
This was followed with hands-on demonstrations and discussions on the mass rearing protocols of several insect species by the CPMD technical staff, namely Mr. Arnil Alleluya and Ms. Jessica Buenafe for the predatory stink bug (๐๐ฐ๐ค๐ข๐ฏ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ข ๐ง๐ถ๐ณ๐ค๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ต๐ข); Mr. John Paul Maminta and Mr. Robert Ticong for the fall armyworm; Ms. Merabil Corpuz, Mr. Ronald Omayana, and Mr. Edmund Poquiz for the grain moth (๐๐ช๐ต๐ฐ๐ต๐ณ๐ฐ๐จ๐ข ๐ค๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข); and Ms. Blessie Joy Olarve and Ms. Natalie Corpus for the three (3) Trichogramma species (๐. ๐ซ๐ข๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ค๐ถ๐ฎ, ๐. ๐ฆ๐ท๐ข๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด๐ค๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ด, ๐. ๐ค๐ฉ๐ช๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ด). Mr. Maminta also demonstrated the operations and functions of the KEYENCE digital microscope in the Microscopy Room while Mr. Noor Pascan led the tour in the Pests Reference Collection Room, both at the National Crop Pest Management Center.
