The team of Dr. Peter M. Magdaraog, Chief Agriculturist from the Bureau of Plant Industry – Crop Pest Management Division (BPI–CPMD), conducted a survey in Region 7, particularly those laboratories that are producing biocontrol agents (BCAs) on August 19-23, 2024. This activity aims to evaluate the existing biocon laboratories and assess the need to establish new BCA village laboratories in the region.

To date, the village laboratory of the municipality of Bayawan in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental produces 𝘌𝘶𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦, 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘱., and 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘮 and 𝘛. 𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦. The Municipal Mayor provides funding and assistance for their laboratory, giving priority to agricultural programs.

While, the BCA laboratory of the Regional Crop Protection Center 7 (RCPC 7) in Mandaue City, Cebu, which has been operating since 1983, produces 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢, 𝘌𝘶𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦, 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘮, 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦, and 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘱. Also, RCPC has been conducting various training in the production and management of agricultural pests using BCAs. They also provide common supplies and equipment for BCA mass production.

Dr. Bienvenido D. Acabal Jr, RCPC Chief and Ms. Norma B. Repol, ILD Chief are planning to set-up more BCA labs particularly in Bohol, Siquijor and Canlaon City to cater the needs of the farmers and to ensure availability of high quality BCAs.
