The team from the Bureau of Plant Industry – Crop Pest Management Division (BPI–CPMD), led by Ms. Blessie Joy Olarve, conducted a survey in existing biological control laboratories in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) last September 30 to October 4, 2024. This activity aims to evaluate the existing biological control laboratories and strengthen the conceptualization of establishing village-type biological control laboratories in the region.

The Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) of CAR is currently producing 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢, 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘺𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘢, 𝘌𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘐𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘢, 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦, Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV), 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘮, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘨𝘮𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘶𝘮. The RCPC also closely coordinates with the DA-Research Outreach Stations (DA-ROS) in Rizal, Kalinga and Luna, Apayao for the production and distribution of earwigs (𝘌𝘶𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢). Meanwhile, BPI Baguio is also producing 𝘉. 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢, 𝘔. 𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦, and 𝘛. 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘻𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘮 while the College of Agriculture of Benguet State University also produces and sells 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 𝘬𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘪.

The respondents all agree on the establishment of village level laboratories for accessible and sustainable BCA production and distribution. They also believed that this will encourage more farmers to use biological control.
