Field Monitoring and Validation of Onion Armyworm Infestation in Region II | March 12, 2024 - March 15, 2024

Published by Crop Pest Management Division  2024-03-15

The Bureau of Plant Industry – Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD) together with the Regional Crop Protection Center II (RCPC), Nueva Viscaya Experimental Station (NVES) and staff from the Municipal Agriculture’s Office (MAO),revisited three municipalities in Nueva Viscaya namely: Aritao, Bambang, and Dupax del sur to conduct field monitoring and validation of onion armyworm infestation.

According to their MAO, many onion farmers in Aritao and Dupax del Sur have finished harvesting their onions. Meanwhile, a low infestation incidence of onion armyworm, leaf miners, and thrips was observed in the onion fields of the farmer cooperator and the adjacent field in Bambang.

During the validation, the BPI-CPMD team noticed that after harvest some farmers abandoned the waste part of onion that has been infested by onion armyworm larvae. This is alarming since these debris can be used by onion armyworm as food source and later on become an adult and eventually multiply. In response, BPI- CPMD team extended technical briefing to farmers which include proper disposal of waste, and provided pheromone lures, bio-pesticides, pesticides, and IEC materials about the management of onion pest and diseases that they can use for the next cropping season.

Lastly, the BPI-CPMD team will continue the monitoring and validation of onion armyworm in Region 2 in the next cropping season to ensure the reduction of economic losses due to pests and diseases.
