The Bureau of Plant Industry – Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD) together with the Regional Crop Protection Center II and staff from the Municipal Agriculture’s Office, revisited three municipalities in Nueva Viscaya namely:Bambang, Aritao and Dupax del sur to conduct field monitoring and validation of onion armyworm infestation.

Thirty-two (32) onion farmers were given technical assistance through a technical briefing, and provided with pheromone lures, bio-pesticides, synthetic pesticides and IEC materials about the management of onion pests and diseases.

During field validation, the major pests observed were leaf miners and thrips in the onion field of farmer cooperators and adjacent fields.Affected farmers were advised to install yellow sticky traps immediately to reduce the adult population of leaf miners and use of bio-pesticide to control thrips.

The BPI-CPMD team will regularly monitor onion growing municipalities in Region 2, specifically in the province of Nueva Viscaya, until harvest to ensure the reduction of economic losses due to pests and diseases.
