The Bureau of Plant Industry-Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD), together with the Municipal Agriculturist Office and Regional Crop Protection Center of Region III, validated the incidences of brown planthoppers (BPH) on rice fieldsin different municipalities in Nueva Ecija. High infestation levels of BPH were observed in three municipalities in Nueva Ecija, namely Cabanatuan City, Santa Rosa, and Guimba. Due to this, farmers were forced to harvest their crops early to salvage the remaining palay. This therefore resulted in the diminished quality of their produce, ultimately reducing their income. Having seen this scenario, there is indeed a heavy impact of El Nino on rice production, especially pests and diseases.

In response to this, BPI-CPMD extended technical assistance on how to handle such a situation, which includes proper water management, judicious use of appropriate pesticides, and promotion of the utilization of biological control agents (BCAs).

Afterwards, the team provides bio-pesticides, synthetic pesticides, and IEC materials about the management of BPH to affected farmers.
